Hello, all: Im at an internet cafe with a French computer, where the z is in the a position, the a in the z position, the at sign is a 2, and everytime \i hit the shift key i get a backslash, so i think i will write this like archie the cockroach, all small letters because im too stupid to figure out what to do and still type in the 10 minutes i have left.\
\laura and jonathan met us at the airport, with much glee. We went back to their home, partway up a mountain in a suburb of kigali, meeting many of \laura's friends en route into the house. Everyone is very formal and welcoming, with great dignity. \
The last Saturday of every month is a community work day, where everyone participates in a community
project. We decided to participate, so at 7:30 a.m. a neighbor came by
to take Philip and i to the site. Before we left, \matt and laura gave us a machete and a weed
whacker. You cannot begin to imagine what it felt like walking through the streets of \Kigali rwanda
carrying a machete, with every single other person walking down the street, in twos and threes, likewise
carrying machetes. It may have been one of the most surreal experiences of my life. I had come
to the land of genocide, and was about to use (or learn to use) the tool of death as my first introduction
to the country!
